Mode I fracture propagation

A single fracture in a plate subject to tension propagates through a homogeneous medium (Young's modulus 70GPa, Poisson's ration 0.27). The analytical solution for the critical stress and the simulations are in excellent agreement (Mode I fracture toughness K = 1MPasqrtm). Two different meshes are tested; the graded mesh shows the even better results.

On sub-regional scale the stress field is not homogeneous. A fracture mechanics simulation with roxol will therefore deliver a simulation of the stress alterations at fault tips and fault jumps. The regional stress field may be modelled using our standard workflows. In those regions one can expect a critically stressed fracture network with implications for engineering projects such as geothermal energy extraction.
In regions of reduced stresses the hydraulic performance might be improved, compared to areas of increased differential stress, where stability issues might arise during wellbore sinking.
